PET: Versatile Applications Overview

Furthermore, biaxially oriented PET film (BOPET), due to its high strength and puncture resistance, is often used as a composite layer in food packaging (such as in potato chip bags and the outer layer of vacuum packaging), or as a standalone wrapper for candy and biscuits.

Pharmaceutical Packaging: Pharmaceutical PET bottles (such as capsule bottles and oral solution bottles) are chemically inert and non-reactive with pharmaceuticals. Their high transparency allows for easy inspection of the contents. PET aluminum-plastic blister packaging (such as tablet blisters) combines the rigidity of PET with the high barrier properties of aluminum foil, effectively protecting pharmaceuticals from moisture and oxygen, extending their shelf life.

Textile and Fiber Industry: The Chemical Nature of "Polyester"

PET's textile applications are centered around "polyester" (the trade name for PET fiber), which accounts for over 70% of global synthetic fiber production. Produced through a melt-spinning process, PET fiber boasts high strength (breaking strength 2-3 times that of cotton), abrasion resistance, wrinkle resistance, and easy cleaning.

Consumer Textile Industry: Polyester staple fiber can be blended with cotton and wool to create fabrics for shirts, jeans, and jackets, retaining the comfort of natural fibers while enhancing wrinkle resistance and durability. Polyester filament is used in sportswear, socks, curtains, and other items, boasting high elastic recovery and resistance to deformation.

Industrial fibers: High-strength PET fibers (such as polyester industrial yarn) have a tensile strength of over 800 MPa and can be used to make tire cord (to enhance tire strength and wear resistance), conveyor belt frames, fishing nets, seat belts, etc. - the PET cord in automobile tires can withstand the huge tension during tire rolling, extending the tire's service life.

With the development of the new energy industry, PET, thanks to its weather resistance, barrier properties, and processability, has opened up new applications in the photovoltaic and energy storage sectors:

Photovoltaic backsheets: The backsheets of photovoltaic modules need to withstand long-term outdoor exposure to UV rays, wind and rain. 

PET-based backsheets (such as TPT and TPE backsheets, with a PET core layer and a fluorine film on both sides) offer excellent weather resistance and insulation, protecting photovoltaic cells from environmental damage. Their service life can reach over 25 years, accounting for 10%-15% of the cost of photovoltaic modules.

Energy storage battery packaging: Liquid lithium-ion battery packaging (such as the aluminum-plastic film for soft-pack batteries) often uses PET as the outer layer, leveraging its rigidity and puncture resistance to protect the internal cells. Research is also underway to use modified PET films as electrolyte carriers in solid-state batteries, leveraging their molecular structure stability to enhance battery safety.
